What we already know
Frameless Flexible wipers have been out on the market for a while already and we all know the following benefits:
1. Lower profile, sexier looking ride.
2. Multiple points (thousands of them) of pressure, unlike traditional wipers with 4-8 points of pressure exerted over the entire length of wiper.
3. Simple to install and can be used on many Japanese, Korean cars, amongst others.
BUT, also due to the cool single torsion blade design, other problems come about it. Juddering, shuddering sounds, uneven up/down strokes. Also due to the multiple points of pressure, while it ensures a clean even wipe, it also requires that your windscreen is wax free as well as your wiper arm spring to be of the right tension.
Why need a spoiler on the wiper?
Frameless wipers need a spoiler to perform properly. The spoiler is meant to help the wiper cut through the high wind speeds when the car is travelling even at our city speeds or expressway. Next time you drive at 90-100km/h on the expressway, try to wind down the window and stick your hand out (safely of course), feel the wind effects. It's strong. So, the spoiler on your wiper actually does a very important job of directing airflow out of the way of the wiper, so that it doesn't have to work so hard to move against the wind.
When the spoiler works in the RIGHT direction, it means that your down stroke of the wiper arm returning to the resting position has the spoiler working FOR it, and helps to reduce the air drag thus presenting less resistance AND shuddering/juddering. It's when you spoiler is in the WRONG direction or that it doesn't work well, that it judders (amongst other factors such as wax on your windscreen).
Now, again, a single directional wiper that works in the RIGHT direction on the down stroke, means it's working in the WRONG direction on the up stroke. That means that a wiper on the upstroke, has to work harder since the spoiler is positioned wrongly and working against the airflow.
