Sharing of My Experience

Hi all,

happen to stumble onto this forum and found it interesting. Just felt like sharing what i have learnt along the way and hopefully more of us can find success in our little business. This is more for those whom are looking into doing online business as this is where my i have a little experience at.

Just a quick intro, i have been working in the corporate world for 5 years + and got sick of the 8am - 7pm routine. I won't say i am successful now but i am lucky enough to be able to lead a comfortable life with a lot more freedom.

Impt must know about your website:

1. Domain name

One thing you have to absolutely avoid when doing up your website is to allow the vendor to purchase the domain for you. It is IMPORTANT and VITAL to ensure the domain is registered under YOUR NAME.

I have seen vendor registering under their own name. As such the true owner of the domain is the vendor not you.

If i am to give an example, it would be like purchasing a HDB flat. You pay for the flat and you ensure the flat owner name registered at HDB is your name not the property agent right? this same theory applies to your website.

2. Avoid any recurring payment

This is dumb and stupid. It is for this reason that i state point 1. You do not want to be held ransom to pay the vendor $$ every year. The only recurring payment should be for your web hosting as it is an on going service. web design etc: 1 x service only. Unless the vendor promises you to do a major revamp every year but than again no point commiting to it nor do you need a revamp every year (probably hurt your biz more than help it).

3. Web Hosting cost

basically not more than SGD$120 per year for something good enough.

4. Marketing

Honestly i wont be saying how you should market as there are lots of method but i do think it is very important to be accountable. Not sure how i should explain this lol.

5. website

use only CMS or any other platform that allows you to do updating and editing yourself. you wont want to end up paying a few hundred for each editing. 1. waste $$ 2. waste time waiting for the editing to be done.

ending it here for now. if u need anything just pm me.

Personally, I think 120 is high for a beginner website, but I guess with a higher price, they give better value. Other then that, it is a good place for beginners to start. :)

I used to pay $80 to my hosting company per year but it was very slow to get into my website because of high traffic.I upgraded the speed to $120 per year and it was very fast.
