Wheelock Place Oddly Quiet After Borders Shuts Doors

Things have become quieter at Wheelock Place after its anchor tenant Borders closed for good last month.

Ri Stationers shop, owned by Ms Kathleen Loi, had just opened in Wheelock Place and seemed to attract the crowds that frequented Borders. However, things now look less certain for the four-month-old shop, since the bookstore closed in August.

“Borders was one of the reasons that I chose this location,” the 28-year-old owner said. “Business was just picking up. Now, without an anchor tenant, there are fewer people.”

Borders announced last month that its flagship store at Wheelock Place will be closed for good, after an administrative discrepancy in the cheque issued to Wheelock Properties led the owner to take over the premises.

“Although a cashier's order was then subsequently drawn, the Landlord, having re-entered the premises, was unwilling to reverse the actions it had already taken,” it said in a statement last month.

“The Company is therefore unable to reopen its store in Wheelock Place which it has occupied for the last 13 years.”
