AsiaOne AFTER just 10 months, the extensive $40 million rejuvenation project on Orchard Road has been completed. The enhancement work, which commenced in April 2008, saw the repaving of the pedestrian malls and installation of co-ordinated street furniture in the Tanglin, Orchard and Somerset zone. The shopping precinct, which sees some 7 million tourists annually, will also receive a breath of fresh air with private property owners refurbishing their developments. Cuppage Terrace, Palais Renaissance and Paragon have finished refurbishment of their facades, while Mandarin Gallery and Park hotel will finish works by this year and 2010 respectively. The Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA) is planning a series of events to promote the enhanced area, kicking off with a launch event in May. In the pipelines are a privately organized Audi Fashion Festival and the Great Singapore Sale which is starting on May 29 this year. ________________________________ Tanglin Zone • 20 flower totems were put up along the pedestrian mall in this 0.5km flora-themed zone, bringing colours and vibrancy to the area. • Flowering Frangipani trees have also been planted at the intersection of Tanglin Road and Orange Grove Road to create a gateway at this end of the zone. Orchard Zone • The forest-themed Orchard zone has tree lightings and illuminated glass panels to create a strong iconic night time vista. • 25 urban green rooms which serve as additional space for mini-performances, busking, sculptures and art exhibitions. Somerset Zone • This zone features a fruit theme, characterized by flowering plants with orange, yellow and red hues to reflect Orchard Road's history as a nutmeg and fruit plantation. |
