Sadly nobody will share with you the secrets if they have been successful. There are many tips and advices in books and internet, but they are all general advices, which most probably you are acquainted with, since you have already tried many things. For every one successful online seller, there are probably thousands who fail or struggling. There are so many factors to consider, but most important are:
1) Are you getting the traffic to yr site?
2) Do you have a product that is differentiating from other similar products? Remember you are competing against other online sites, as well as brick-and-mortar retail stores selling similar products. Ask: why should people buy t-shirts from you, and not from the store that they can see, feel and test?

Sorry, i have not helped you very much. I am a keen observer and student of the retail scene in Singapore, and it is tough. It is better to be a Landlord!!

Yes, they will suck you dry for every single cents that you earn. :yippee:

The good thing about online shopping is the low cost and no one can jack up your rental based on your sales.

Hello FunPal, the online selling market is very competitive. Many people come and go. The way to succeed is to bite the bullet and stay through. Build and stabilise your customer base and in years to come you will be successful. I am new and won't say i am successful at this point but my observation of successful online sellers is that they have 2 traits:

1) They have been around for a few years at least and by word of mouth built a good base of customers.

2) They deliver good service. This means they not only retain their existing customers, their existing customers are confident to tell their friends about them. Word of mouth marketing is still most powerful in online selling.

Starting a business is always difficult at first because you need to get people to know you and trust you. But if you have stamina to stay long enough and deliver what you promise, you will certainly succceed. All the best! =)

My suggestion, you need to follow what the market demand is. Then, you need to have a lot of time, be patient to answer buyers questions. And deal with your customers fast and with good service.

I use to sell on Yahoo auction and luckily be the highest score Singapore seller then.

Re: Any Successful Online Seller?

dont really agree with the previous post-
you should not be selling wat the market wants. you shouuld be setting the trend and leading the pack. that way, a unique product thats new in the market will generate more buzz. you can get better media coverage/press coverage that way, and this of course has to be coupled with plenty of marketing, educating and promoting, then u will be the front-runner for that product.
the first-mover advantage always helps significantly. and yes, likely that you will be rolling in some good profit. for at least the beginning part.

the problem with retailers in singapore is that they are all copy cats. they have little originality and take the easy way out by riding on the coat-tails of other successful formulas. but it is not so simple. and usually, by the time you latch onto a successful formula, it has more or less been milked to death by so many others.
so my advice:
- deliver a unique concept- and its not just the product, but a whole shopping experience (packaging too)
- build a strong client base- already mentioned by another previous poster
- deliver a value-added service that other competitors wouuld not have.
- finally u have to ask yourself what defines a successful online seller-
strong profits, or strong and recognizable brand. these two can be mutually exclusive.

just my two cents :smoke:

db, you are absolutly correct... except that it is extremely hard, if not down right impossible to have a unique concept any more. basically, everything is is just copied over and over.. add abit here, subtract a little there, change a little colour...

There is no right or wrong. Sometimes in business, a lot also depends on one's luck. It's all about timing... at the right time, in the right place, with the right people..... 天时地利人和..... Anyway, talk is cheap :laff: Good luck! :yippee:

Re: Any Successful Online Seller?

Hi,

I've just started my online biz, selling wireless IP cameras. So far only tried marketing in online forum, distributing brochures in new neighbourhood and tried a bazaar stall with very poor response.

Customers who bought from me are happy with the product as it allows them to monitor their maid/kids/home when they are at work, using iPhone/internet. I'm also happy to sell a product that is useful to them.

However, I have difficulty reaching out to a wider crowd. Do you think a product like mine is essential to have a retail store for pple to look and feel before buying? Any suggestions on how to improve sales for such products?

Yes, advertising. Maybe to be more accurate, strategic advertising. Today's consumers are bombarded with overloading information from advertisers, such that they are pretty much numb and immune to advertising gimmicks. So, strategic positioning and marketing is important.

Hi Alan,

If you can let me know what you are selling and your target audience, I can suggest links/marketing methods for you.

yeah.. 1st thing you always encounter when doing a business. What you like, others might not. even if they do like it, how much are they willing to pay for it? have you checked market price in SG yet? Generally as a rule, pure table ornaments are out of fashion. It needs to look good as well as useful.
